Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is a framework that specifies the knowledge teachers must possess in order to effectively teach with technology. The three main forms of knowledge are Content (CK), Pedagogy (PK), and Technology (TK). Content knowledge is teachers’ knowledge about specific subject areas to be learned. Pedagogical knowledge is teachers’ knowledge about the methods of teaching. Technology knowledge is about working with technology, tools and resources. The three main three forms of knowledge form intersections. The intersection of all of three is Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). It is defined as understanding of the way teaching and learning can change as technologies are used in certain ways. It is said that TPACK is “is the basis of effective teaching with technology, requiring an understanding of the representation of concepts using technologies; pedagogical techniques that use technologies in constructive ways to teach content; knowledge of what makes concepts difficult or easy to learn and how technology can help redress some of the problems that students face; knowledge of students’ prior knowledge and theories of epistemology; and knowledge of how technologies can be used to build on existing knowledge to develop new epistemologies or strengthen old ones” (Koehler & Mishra, 2009).
